Obviously there's a part of me that applauds the willingness of all three critics, at a time when 2666 was the Hot Hot Book in the US, to swim against the current. No, I didn't buy 2,666 Brussels sprouts. It wasn't as if I had been dying to read it. What I did was read a book with 2,666 pages. That's not something very many people are willing to do. Every book that isn't a masterpiece is cannon fodder, a slogging foot soldier, a piece to be sacrificed, since in multiple ways it mimics the design of the masterpiece.
